What are Goals?
To have success in life, goals are essential. So what are goals? They are what you are aiming for. The dreams you have written down are where you want to be. If you have not written them down yet, I would encourage you to do so. For a recap on
dream building click here.
So now you need to act on your dreams and start some goal setting activity. You are after all a goal oriented animal and without goals you will just wander around with your hands in your pockets, waiting for something to happen. You might even get into wishful thinking or just go round criticizing everything that comes your way.
What would you rather be? A Rhino driving a Rolls Royce or a cow in the field chewing the cud.
Let us get out of the field to find success. Allow me to explain how to create and write down goals.
Theory of Goal Setting
The way you create and write your goal, to be effective, is very important. It is your subconscious mind that you need to influence. The way you talk to yourself has a direct effect on your inner self. The theory of goal setting is based on the fact that your subconscious mind does not know the difference between fact or fiction. Here are some personal goals, examples to help me illustrate to you how this works. To fully understand "What are goals"
"I'm hopeless at remembering names." "I can't dance."
"Nothing ever goes right for me." "That's Just my luck."
"I never have enough time." "When will I ever learn!"
"I'm just no good!" "I never win anything!"
"I'd like to stop smoking but I can't seem to quit."
"Nobody Likes me." "I can't spell"
"I just can't seem to get anything done!"
Do some of these sound familiar. We have all used these type of goals in the past without knowing it. The subconscious mind take these statements as fact and carries them out without question. Yes these are all negative harmful instructions that you can give yourself, without thinking.
Did I hear you say "Ouch!" If this was a painful realisation, you are getting closer to understanding: "What are goals?" Be careful what you say when you talk to yourself! What I am trying to do for you is to help you to turn your mind around. Think about what you can do instead of what you can't do.
How to create and write goals
What are goals? They are statements of what you want. If you do it right, it is what you will get. I can now reveal the four simple steps of how to create and write your goals down:
- Define your dream precisely and concisely, exactly what it is that you want.
- State it in the present tense, as if it has already happened.
- Write it down.
- And spend time with it, every day
Now let me illustrate with an example of something that can change your life. It worked for me. Let me take one of the examples from above and turn it around.
"I'd like to stop smoking but I can't seem to quit."
Suppose this is what you had listed as one of your dreams. Now, using the four steps: Define your dream precisely and concisely, exactly what it is that you want. State it in the present tense, as if it has already happened. Write it down and spend time with it, every day.
My goal became: "I do not Smoke"
As you spend time with it every day, saying to yourself, "I do not Smoke" "I do not Smoke" "I do not Smoke" Your subconscious mind takes it on as fact and makes it happen. Just think about it. If you do not smoke, how can you have a craving? Believe in the goal, spend time with it every day until it becomes a habit.
Understanding "What are Goals?"
Deciding that you want to do something with you life. Then build your dreams and understand the theory of goal setting. Use your dreams to set your goals. Apply the four steps above to any of your written dreams. Write them down in the present tense and spend time with them every day. But remember to be positive, precise and concise to get the outcome you wished for.
The Next Step
If you haven't yet written your list of dreams, I recommend you revisit:
Why do people dream?
With your list of dreams in hand, you will hopefully have started to define your own goals. Again making sure you write them down in the present tense. This is such an important principle that I cannot emphasize this enough. So much so that to be effective, you will need to spend plenty of time doing this. Also I recommend that you come back to "What are Goals" many times.
So by now you will have a clear understanding of what are goals. You will have created and written down your dreams. You will have spent quite some time defining your goals. You will have a much clearer direction of where you are going. So now it is time for me to move you on to the next principle.
The next principle I'm going to share with you is "Attitude Perception" to see how attitude can effect the success of your dreams and goals.
