Self Image and Self Belief

The self image you have of yourself makes all the difference. This principle I am about to share with you explains how your self belief effects the amount of success you will find. This depends on the image you have of yourself. These factors will have dramatic results on what you allow yourself to do, or achieve. It can also effect how much you believe you are worth.

Let us just imagine you have just won the lottery. There are those who would subconsciously feel uncomfortable with all that money. They would just spend it as quickly as possible to get rid of it. I have heard stories of some who have spent it so rapidly that they kept going and ended up in debt. Your image of self worth can be your downfall.

Your self concept exists because of all the past experiences that you have had. All the way back to just before you where born, your self image started to form. All through your childhood you were wrongly taught that things were more important that you. By the age of fourteen a very high percentage have developed an inferiority complex. This can show up as the bully at school to the child who just gets picked on all the time. These experiences have not made you the way you are. But made you believe the way you are, is the way you are.

"The only luck I have is bad luck.
If it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all!"

Let me ask, who is it, that you, think you are? How is your self belief effecting your self image that you have of yourself? How is it effecting the decisions you are making each day? How much is it holding you back from reaching your full potential? All the well thought out dreams, the goals that you have set, the positive thinking you have adopted can all be rendered ineffective if the image you have of yourself has been formed in the wrong way.

The Good News

Now I have some good news. If you can accept that your self belief has most likely, over the years, formed the image that you have of yourself and that it was made in error. You can over time change that image. Good news? Say yes!

About ten years ago I came to ask myself that there must be more to life than this. I began to study ways that I could become a better person and to start the journey to find success in Life. I studied Dream building and learned how to set my goals. I learned also to work towards eliminating as many of the negatives in my life by concentrating as much as possible only on positive things. I had set my goals become more positive. But why wasn't it working? Something was holding me back.

Yes you guessed it, it was the image that I had of myself which was holding me back. I am telling you this so you can realise how critical your self concept is. I have read many books, attended motivational seminars, been to Ra! Ra! meetings and still my biggest challenge has been my self belief and the image I had of myself.

So if you have found yourself in this position don't give up. There is hope and a way that you can change the image that you have of yourself.

Changing your Image

There are five steps to this process of changing the image that you have of yourself.

  1. Realize that the image that you have of yourself, was made in error.
    Accept that your self belief in the past was formed wrongly.
  2. Because it has been made in error it can be changed.
    There are some that will say sure it was made in error. But its there and I can’t do anything about it.
    No the second step is to say yes it was made in error and I can change it.
  3. Decide who it is that you want to be.
    This is the one that takes the time and energy. Who do you want to be? What characteristics do you want to have? What kind of a person do you want to be?
  4. Write it down.
    You decide who you want to be and write it down.
  5. Spend time with that image, that you have written down, every day.
    Read it out load, if possible out load to yourself in a mirror, with eye to eye contact. You say oh come on you really expect me to stand in front of a mirror and read a list of characteristics? Yup.

Decide who you want to be.

Let me now go back to the step where you need to decide who it is, that you want to be. What kind of a person, what self image and self belief is needed to help you to find success in your life. To help you with this I will share with you in a moment some of the qualities that I have adopted and written down for my own self image. That is not to say that they will apply to you but will help to illustrate the kind of things you might need. I will pick a few that will target qualities I believe will help you achieve the success you desire.

They are stated as perfection. I might add that I have not reached the state of perfection, but I am working towards it every day. On the one hand is my intention, that’s who I want to be. On the other hand is my behaviour, and my behaviour does not always measure up to my intentions.

Make sure that it is what you want to be and not what someone else things that you ought to be. You have simply to sit down to decide who it is that you want to be, the kind of a person that you want to be. Then your self belief in the image you have made can start to happen.

Examples of Self Image.

So here as promised are a few examples of the kind of statements, I have decided, that make up my self belief and image I have of myself.

I am succeeding in each of my activities. Anything I set my hand to do I succeed. That's the kind of person I am. Is that the kind of person you are? Your choice. I’d rather decide to be the kind of person that succeeds in anything I set myself to do, rather than the one that fails at everything I try. You can choose. You decide.

I’m the kind of person that faces adversity with the attitude that the seeds of a greater benefit will emerge. I’m the kind of person that believes that to every disadvantage there is an advantage. You know that one bad apple can spoil the barrel. I know that’s true. But I also know that you can take that barrel of spoiled apples and take one seed from it plant it and grow an orchard. I have decided to look at the orchard not the bad apples. That's the kind of person I am.

I allow myself only to concentrate on my strength. There are some of you who review your weaknesses daily, some of you hourly. Some of you do it by the minute; it’s just a continual flow out of your mouth as to what you can’t do. It is your choice. You can review you weaknesses or you can be the kind of a person that allows yourself only to concentrate on your strengths. I don’t need to concentrate on my weaknesses. Sure they’re there, I’ve got them just like you do. But I don’t need to concentrate on them. I need to concentrate on my strengths. And so do you. This is what I have decided to have as my self belief in the image I have of myself.

I'm the sort of person that likes everyone I meet and they in turn like me. That's a decision I've made. I can be driving down the road and accidentally cut in front of someone. They get upset and drive alongside waving and honking their horn. I say isn’t that great he must know me he is waving at me. Isn’t it a happier experience of life that being so defensive all the time, looking for all the bad things that people are saying about you and thinking about you. Isn’t it much better just to assume that everybody loves you?

Your Result

So do not forget to write down your choices of the kind of person you want to be. Every day spend time with the image you have decided and written down. Your self belief will grow and the dreams and goals you have also set will start to happen.

I do believe that with these principles you can start to find success for yourself. When you find that success, I would be very happy if you would share with me your experiences of success and how a change of self belief helped.

Now it is time to move on to the fifth success principle. All your dreams, goals, the right attitude and new self belief and self image will start to happen only when you realise your action potential
